Mason Reed loved Halloween more than any other nite. Things that made him happy were glowing pumpkins, fake spiderwebs, costumes, candy, and the thought that anything could happen. Mason dressed up as Captain Nova that year because that was his favorite comic book girl. He was going to trick-or-treat with Ethan and Priya, two of his best friends.
Mason went behind his garage before it got dark to look for his lost plastic sword. He heard a strange scratching sound near the trash cans. Suddenly, a hand that was pale green showed up. Mason was scared when he saw a boy with gray-green skin, dark hair that was all over the place, stitches in his neck, torn jeans, and only one red shoe.
The weird boy looked like a zombie, but he wasn't scared. He was sad, scared, and tired. He asked Mason in a quiet voice not to scream, but Mason did it anyway.
Zee was the name of the zombie boy. Mason quickly found out that Zee was not at all like zombies in scary movies. He didn't hurt people or eat brains. He liked everyday things like pizza, comic books, video games, and monster movies.
Zee got away from the creepy Hollow Creek Research Center, where scientists were looking into the strange changes in his body. He didn't remember much about his family, his old life, or how he turned into a zombie. He was most scared that the experts would find him and take him back.
Ethan, Mason, and Priya chose to help Zee. While they were looking for information about Hollow Creek, they hid him among all the other people out for Halloween.
The kids learned an important lesson on their trip: kids may think someone is scary when they're really nice, lonely, and scared.
Zee didn't really want to be a bad guy.
He just wanted normal friends who would accept him, stick with him, and see the person behind the weird way he looked.
