There are lots of strange stories at Maplewood Middle School. They say that an old science experiment makes one hallway smell like burned toast. They also think that the west stairs has a different number of steps going up and down. Above the front door of the school is a stone owl. A story says that if its glass eyes flash during a storm, the next day there will be no school.
What scares me the most, though, is Locker 13. It's the only building at the end of the school's longest hallway. There, the lights flicker and the floor tiles are almost completely white. The locker is long, thin, rusty, and has blue paint that is peeling off of it. It has a small crescent moon scratched on top of the handle.
They say that every Halloween, Locker 13 opens by itself. Some people have heard a girl crying inside. Some people think that the locker whispers back when someone calls their name thru its holes in the wall. People have also said that books have gone missing, and a pale girl has been seen in the locker mirror.
Teacher thinks these stories are not true. The strict principal, Dr. Blackwood, tells the kids to stay away from the old hallway. When someone talks about the locker, Mr. Vale, the school cleaner, acts in a strange way. He shuts up, grabs his keys tightly, and walks away.
No one has used Locker 13 for years. Then, by accident, it is given to Ethan Cole, a fourteen-year-old boy who doesn't believe in ghosts. Ethan tries to show that the stories are not true with his friends Maya and Noah.
The hall is cold when Ethan opens the locker, though. His books go away, he smells lavender, and strange messages show up. Someone asks him to find the name of a girl named Eleanor Bell who went missing in 1974.
Eleanor is not a threat. Before Halloween nite, she needs Ethan to find out the truth and stop an old threat from coming back.
