On a cold Halloween afternoon, thirteen-year-old Jasmine Carter leaves Maplewood Middle School. The school is decorated with paper bats, orange streamers, and a plastic skeleton. Dark clouds are gathering, and a storm is coming.
Jasmine is late because her science teacher kept her after class. When she reaches the parking lot, her normal school bus, Bus 21, is already leaving. Her mother is at work, her brother is at basketball practice, and walking home would take almost an hour.
Then Jasmine notices an old yellow school bus waiting under a large elm tree. The bus looks very old. Its paint is faded, its wheels are rusty, and its windows are cloudy. A small sign in the front says “Maplewood Route.”
Jasmine thinks it might be an extra school bus. Because the rain is starting, she decides to get on.
As soon as Jasmine enters, the door closes behind her. The driver does not speak or ask where she lives. He simply starts driving.
Soon, Jasmine realizes that something is very wrong. The children on the bus are strangers, and their clothes look like they come from many years ago. Everyone seems frightened, but nobody wants to explain why.
The roads outside become covered in thick fog, and Maplewood disappears from view.
Jasmine finally discovers the frightening truth: this school bus disappeared forty years ago, on Halloween in 1986. The driver and fifteen students were never found.
Now the ghost bus is traveling again.
Jasmine must discover what happened to the missing children and why they are trapped between the worlds of the living and the dead. She must also face the terrifying creature following the bus through the fog.
Most importantly, Jasmine must find a way home before Halloween night ends—or she may become another passenger who never returns.
