Krishna Das occupies a unique place in modern spiritual music. Often credited with introducing millions of Western listeners to the ancient practice of kirtan, or devotional chanting, he helped transform a traditional form of sacred music into a global phenomenon. Through his recordings, concerts, and teachings, he became one of the most recognized voices in contemporary spiritual culture.
Born Jeffrey Kagel in New York, Krishna Das came of age during the social and cultural upheavals of the 1960s. Like many seekers of his generation, he traveled to India in search of deeper meaning. There he met the renowned spiritual teacher Neem Karoli Baba, an encounter that profoundly shaped the course of his life. Under the influence of his teacher and the devotional traditions of bhakti yoga, he embraced a path centered on chanting, service, and spiritual practice. Returning to the United States, Krishna Das spent years sharing these teachings through music.
This biography traces Krishna Das's journey from ordinary American youth to internationally respected spiritual musician. Drawing upon historical records, interviews, memoirs, and contemporary accounts, it explores his life, influences, challenges, and enduring contribution to modern devotional culture.
