E. M. W. Tillyard

Eustace Mandeville Wetenhall Tillyard, born on May 19, 1889, and died on October 24, 1962, was a British literary scholar and historian. A fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge, Tillyard became one of the foremost interpreters of Renaissance literature, particularly in the context of its worldview and philosophical underpinnings. His book The Elizabethan World Picture remains a seminal text for students of Shakespeare and early modern culture, illustrating the harmony, order, and cosmic symbolism that shaped Elizabethan thought. Tillyard’s work bridged literary criticism and intellectual history with lasting impact.
