Book Nine is where those building blocks become a structure. It is the book about how everything fits together — how to design a complete portfolio across multiple asset classes, how to manage risk at the portfolio level rather than the position level, how to keep a portfolio aligned with your goals as markets move and life changes, and how to manage the most underestimated risk in all of investing: yourself.
Portfolio management is not glamorous. It does not have the excitement of identifying a great growth stock or the intellectual satisfaction of constructing a complex options strategy. But it is the discipline that determines whether all the knowledge in the preceding eight books actually translates into financial outcomes — or whether it dissipates through poor construction, inadequate risk management, or behavioural mistakes made under pressure.
This book is written for investors who are ready to think about their portfolio as a whole. The level of sophistication it assumes has been built across the preceding volumes. If you are reading this book first, it will still be useful — but you will get more from it having read at least some of the earlier books.
I grew up near London, England before moving to Canada when I was 13, though I had a modest upbringing I was surrounded by some of the wealthiest members of society from an early age. That environment gave me an education that no classroom could fully replicate.
While I was earning my degree in Economics I began trading stocks and options learning the basics of trading. After earning over 700% on a few call options I was hooked on learning more, expanding my knowledge on many different strategies and investment vehicles over the years.
By my mid-twenties I was working with directors and C-suite executives as a trusted analyst at multinational corporations, companies operating in the billions. This gave me a front-row seat to how major businesses are managed and how money moves at the highest levels.
The Market Mentor Series is my way of passing on some of the knowledge I’ve gained while being written for everyone, and backed by a lifetime of having real money on the line.
