About this ebook

In this deeply personal and politically charged volume, Edgar Lee Masters reflects on the origins of Spoon River Anthology and the Greek epigram tradition that shaped his terse, epitaph-like style. He presents that form as a way to capture modern American life with uncommon dignity, then extends his vision into a sequence of poems that probe the nation's history, myths, and moral failures. Dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt, the book opens with "Toward the Gulf," where the Mississippi becomes a symbol of American expansion, liberty, and restless democratic energy, carrying the West from wilderness into destiny. From there, Masters moves between lyric celebration and sharp social critique: Lake Michigan's beauty, river marshes, and spring landscapes stand beside exposures of city corruption, hidden power, and the machinery of exploitation. Biblical retellings of Delilah and Samson become dramas of seduction, betrayal, blindness, and revolutionary justice, while "The World-Saver" mocks the fate of the honest reformer in a deceitful world. Across family tragedy, heredity, faith, and desire, the book offers a darkly comic, searching portrait of America and the human soul. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

Edgar Lee Masters was an American poet, biographer, and novelist whose life bridged the literary energy of the late nineteenth century and the social upheavals of the early twentieth. Born in Kansas and raised in Illinois, he grew up with the rhythms of small-town America, the legal world, and the tensions of ambition, memory, and class that would later shape his writing. After studying law and practicing as an attorney, he turned increasingly to literature, becoming one of the most distinctive voices of his generation. He is best known for his poetic explorations of ordinary lives, especially the hidden griefs, failures, and longings of people in rural and provincial communities, and for his ability to give voice to the dead, the forgotten, and the morally complicated. His work often examines isolation, hypocrisy, regret, and the search for truth beneath public respectability, themes that still feel strikingly modern in an age preoccupied with identity, social pressure, and the stories communities tell about themselves. Masters's writing remains relevant because it insists that every life contains depth and contradiction, and that art can reveal what polite society overlooks. His legacy lies in his fearless use of dramatic monologue and his humane, unsentimental vision of American life, which influenced later poets and readers alike. Those who enjoy psychologically rich poetry, American literary history, and portraits of small-town life with emotional honesty will find him especially rewarding.
