About this ebook

Edgar Lee Masters' dramatic poetry moves from haunted history to intimate heartbreak, from spiritual meditation to sharp social satire. Starved Rock opens on an Illinois landmark as a symbol of vanished peoples, broken empires, and the human hunger for meaning, while Hymn to the Dead, Creation, and The World's Desire explore death, resurrection, love, fertility, and the recurring cycles of nature and myth. In Tyrannosaurus: or Burning Letters, a ruined affair becomes a fierce reflection on memory, loss, and the fragile remains of feeling, even as passion insists on surviving its own destruction. The collection then broadens into philosophical and historical voices: Lord Byron defends his reputation and his worldly understanding of love, The Folding Mirror meditates on the soul's struggle to create meaning from emptiness, and a series of lyrical poems examines art, faith, beauty, age, and renewal. Masters also turns a satiric eye on the "Christian Statesman," exposing the rise of moral ambition, political hypocrisy, and crowd rule. The closing poems range from bitter grief in The Lament of Sophonia to the courtroom-like irony of At Decapolis and the soaring triumph of Winged Victory, tracing humanity's longing to suffer, judge, and finally rise. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

Edgar Lee Masters was an American poet, dramatist, and biographer whose work captured the tensions, disappointments, and hidden lives of ordinary people with striking honesty. Born in Kansas in 1868 and raised in Illinois, he grew up in the Midwest landscape that would later shape much of his writing, and after a difficult family life he studied law, briefly practiced it, and eventually turned fully to literature. He became widely known for his inventive poetic portraits of small-town America, using sharp, dramatic monologues to reveal the private griefs, ambitions, hypocrisies, and moral compromises beneath respectable surfaces. Across his career, he wrote prolifically in poetry, biography, and criticism, and his work often returned to themes of memory, failed idealism, social constraint, and the loneliness of human experience. What makes Masters still relevant today is his unsentimental attention to the voices of people who are often overlooked, a quality that feels especially modern in an age still concerned with class, identity, and the stories communities tell about themselves. His legacy rests not only on his formal innovation but also on his compassionate realism, which helped broaden American poetry's range and influence later writers interested in vernacular speech and psychological depth. Readers who enjoy character-driven poetry, American literary history, and vivid portraits of everyday life will find Masters especially rewarding.
