In the beginning, the writing is brilliant and I was locked in until about 70% of the way. The last chapter diluted the entire experience for me and I skipped through the poetry quotes. I really connected to Haymitch’s character and would have enjoyed this more if the ending had left us with even a modicum of joy.

Hate to say it, but this was a disappointment. The writing was weak, the plot was incoherent at points, almost no returning characters felt in character. More cameos from prior books than made any sense at all, Haymitch suddenly knows everyone, and nothing felt new or interesting. I wanted to like this, but when I finished it, I just had a bad taste in my mouth. Kind of expensive, too.

It was a very interesting book and I really liked how it tied together some more history of the games just like Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I would give it five stars, but there is literally no possible way for me to justify the price.
