About this ebook

Gout isn’t a fatal disease, but it can make life feel unbearable. The sudden redness, swelling, heat, and knife-like pain often strike at night, leaving you unable to walk or even bear the touch of a sheet. This is not another clinical medical book. It is the honest, deeply personal account of a seventy-year-old layman who suffered from gout for over twenty years, witnessed its terrifying side effects — including a patient who lost his life to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome caused by allopurinol — and eventually discovered his own simple lifeline. For more than seven years, he has remained completely gout-free — not through strict dieting or lifelong medication, but by taking just two teaspoons of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar with the mother in a glass of water each day. He still enjoys rich feasts and festivals, yet the attacks have never returned. This little book does not claim to be a miracle cure, nor does it ask you to abandon conventional medicine. It simply offers one more practical, harmless, and inexpensive option when standard treatments feel insufficient or too risky. With clear explanations of gout’s causes, the dangers of common drugs, dietary guidance, and useful appendices, it also shares the author’s hard-earned wisdom about the body, aging, and living with proportion. If you are tired of gout’s torment or worried about the side effects of uric acid-lowering drugs, this book may give you something rare and precious: real hope, practical help, and the quiet comfort of knowing you are not alone. In a vast sea, even a small twig can keep you afloat.

About the author

Wei Lin — over seventy years old, has crossed many boundaries, walked through the smoke and fire of the human world, and witnessed both the fragility and resilience of life.

For decades in the medical profession, walking alongside patients taught him composure, moderation, and humility in the face of suffering. The hospital shaped his vision and his understanding of life: pain needs to be seen, vulnerability deserves respect, and both knowledge and compassion can become a form of healing.

He once spent a short period as a monk and observed the Eight Precepts. His life is stable and his family is harmonious.

In his spare time he keeps company with the ancients, befriends poetry and books, and takes the classics as companions.

His temperament does not follow the mainstream, yet he has always held himself with a benevolent heart. He is chivalrous but free-spirited, and harbours deep respect for life.

He lives with his wife and daughter, walks with his dog, takes half of the Analects as a friend, a few Buddhist verses as a lamp, and several chapters of military strategy as a mirror. May the rest of his days remain clear-minded and compassionate, untouched by the aging of time.
