Traveling to her grandfather Cullen's remote cabin on Lake Huron, Ethel Carew meets a young soldier on the train who turns out to be going the same way. Barney Loutrelle is an orphan raised by Chippewas, sent to this wild spot by a message received at a séance, apparently from Ethel's recently-departed father, instructing him to meet someone named Carew on his way to a place called Resurrection. The answer to Barney's riddle is Resurrection Rock, a rocky island off the shore of the Cullen estate boasting a mysterious house that has never been occupied. When it becomes clear that Ethel's grandfather has had someone killed at the house on the Rock on the day after their arrival, Ethel and Barney team up to unravel the mysteries in both of their pasts, aided by a steady stream of messages from beyond the grave.
