Marjorie Hale has grown up among the wealthy set of Evanston, proud of her father's mounting accomplishments in the business world and never questioning her role as the dutiful daughter, until the night she is summoned from a dance to attend to her father, who has been shot by a jealous ex-husband in the apartment of his mistress. Against the advice of her fiancé, Billy Whittaker, Marjorie follows the lead of her friend Greg Mowbry and retains the services of Felix Rinderfield, a lawyer best known for his ability to smooth over awkward situations. Though her father's indiscretions are kept from the public, Marjorie's identity is shattered, and she must flee the only life she has known to make a new start in the world.
