About this ebook

Can words change the world?

Maria Ressa grows up in the Philippines with a curious mind and a desire to understand what happens around her. That curiosity leads her into journalism, where asking questions, checking facts and listening carefully become part of her everyday life.

With her fellow reporters at Rappler, Maria investigates events and challenges the false stories spreading through social media. When her work brings threats and court cases, she continues to defend freedom of the press. Her journey to the Nobel Peace Prize shows how courage and determination can help protect everyone’s right to reliable information.

Written for children aged 6 to 12, Maria. The Power of Words combines an engaging true story with colour illustrations, a glossary, quizzes and word games. Activities encourage young readers to question headlines, check sources and think carefully about what they read and share.

An invitation to discover, discuss and learn together, at home or in the classroom.

Part of the People of Our Time series by Nina Corbil, introducing children to women and men whose courage and commitment have helped make society a better place.
