About this ebook

A worker wakes at 6:15 a.m., orders coffee through an app, takes the train to a job in the centre of a city he can't afford to live in. By the time he makes his first conscious decision of the day, fifteen unseen structures have already chosen for him.

I started this book by trying to list every structure that had pre-decided something about my morning before I noticed it. The list got long fast. Zoning law from before I was born. App defaults nobody chose. Train schedules built around a city plan that decided who counts as a "user." Pricing algorithms I can't audit. Each one was put in place by identifiable people, in meetings that left records, then forgotten as background.

The book walks through eight layers: inherited environment, Bourdieu's habitus, default options (Thaler and Sunstein), framing (Kahneman), black-box algorithms, the politics of physical space, language as cognition, and the path-dependencies you didn't start. Each gets a concrete case. Each gets a question that lets a reader find one of those layers in their own week.

I'm an operator who runs three small businesses in Indonesia. The leather workshop runs on tools laid out by my grandfather. The pump distribution business runs on payment terms set by a colonial-era import code nobody has reopened. Half of operating a small company is just noticing which rules you inherited and which you built. The book is a working tool for that noticing.

For readers looking for Bourdieu, Thaler and Sunstein, choice architecture, algorithmic governance, urbanism and inherited infrastructure, small-business operators trying to see the rails their morning runs on. Written from operator context in Indonesia, but the diagnostics apply to anyone curious about which choices in their life were actually theirs.
