The second edition of Ordinary Differential Equations and Applied Linear Algebra expands the learning experience by introducing case studies at the end of every chapter. The case studies include SIR models, a model for lead poisoning in the human body, and a study of the dynamics of strongly damped forced oscillators. Also present are end-of-chapter projects that allow students to explore the interplay between the creation of a mathematical model, the solution of the model, and the physical implications of the mathematical solution. Specifically, projects deal with the ranking of web page importance through the Google PageRank algorithm, the study of pollution flow in the Great Lakes, a compartment model for lead poisoning in the human body, and glucose/insulin interactions in the bloodstream, among others. Also new to the second edition is access to over 300 online homework problems embedded within the CMS myOpenMath.
This book is designed for a one-semester course for which a treatment of linear algebra and ODEs is needed. It assumes no prior background in linear algebra, although students with previous experience will find the first chapter’s survey of key linear algebra concepts a valuable refresher.
Over a career that spans more than 30 years as a mathematics professor, Todd Kapitula has taught at Calvin University, the University of New Mexico, Virginia Tech, and the University of Utah. He is the author or coauthor of more than 50 peer-reviewed research articles, one of which won the SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize. Calvin University awarded him the Provost’s Award for Enduring Scholarly Contributions for his lifetime of scholarly work. He coauthored with Keith Promislow the seminal graduate-level text Spectral and Dynamical Stability of Nonlinear Waves (Springer, 2013). He is currently most interested in undergraduate mathematics education and getting undergraduate students involved in research projects.
