An adventure story with magic called The Mapmaker of Seven Kingdoms is about a girl named Lina Maren who is fifteen years old. Lina is a trainee at Master Orren's map shop in Bellhaven's old city. Maps are her favorite thing because they help her see the world. She can carefully remember forms, follow the stars, figure out how far something is, and draw coastlines.
Lina sees something that can't be true one day. An old map that is kept in a locked glass box starts to change. Mountains move, rivers change course, islands appear and disappear, and new roads form on their own. There is a voice that says, "Find the road." One nite, a silver road shows up on the map.
Lina finds out that the seven shapes on the map stand for seven kingdoms that have been lost: Avelorn, Meridia, Thornwall, Caldris, Selvaren, Orinth, and Veyra. There was a terrible war hundreds of years ago that blocked these kingdoms off with a magical wall. The wall is now coming down, letting the ancient armies that were trapped inside come back.
Lina sets out on a dangerous trip with Nico, a happy thief, Rowan, a royal messenger, and Quill, a talking crow. They go through strange places where the time changes, the roads move, and mountains appear and disappear. They get seven special stones and finally get to the middle of the barrier, which is called the Compass Heart.
Lina finds out that drawing on the old map can change the magical roads. She decides not to destroy the barrier all the way or keep the kingdoms out for good. She instead builds safe roads that connect the Seven Kingdoms to the modern world and keep dangerous forces from getting through.
Lina is known as the Mapmaker of the Seven Kingdoms by the end. Maps can show people where to go, but they can't tell people what is right. People have to decide how to use the roads ahead of time. We can learn about bravery, duty, freedom, trust, and making smart decisions from this story.
