Easy Summary - The House That Chose Its Children

At the end of Briar Lane in Bellweather, there was an old and mysterious house called Ashmoor House. People in the town were scared of it because it was said that strange things happened there. Even though the house had been empty for a long time, some people saw lights moving behind the windows. Some people thought the stairs moved at night, doors appeared out of nowhere, and people spoke softly inside the walls. Most people didn't go to the house because of these stories.

Amy Vale, who is thirteen years old, had no idea what Ashmoor was like before her family moved there. Daniel and Leila, Amara's younger brother Sami, and their small blue house were destroyed by a terrible storm, so they had to find a new place to live. Daniel found Ashmoor House because it was really cheap to rent. He thought it might be a good place for the family to live.

But Amara knew right away that something wasn't right.

Not long after, the rooms started to move, stairs showed up where there hadn't been any before, and a strange bedroom with Amara's name carved on the door appeared. It looked like the house was alive.

Three more kids—Rowan, Priya, and Elias—were also called Ashmoor in a strange way. They found out together that the house had been keeping strange kids with magical powers safe for hundreds of years. However, Ashmoor was keeping something bad from them as well.

Amara's ancestor, Orin Vale, used to guard the mansion and lived in the memory of him behind a locked Black Door. With the help of the memories and powers kept in the house, Orin had tried to live forever. Even though his plan didn't work, his memory stayed there.

The kids, including Amara, had to figure out why Ashmoor picked them and stop Orin before he got strong again.

Amara learned that home is more than just a house in the end. People feel safe, loved, accepted, and free to make their own decisions at home.
