Respiratory illnesses are a leading global cause of morbidity, health care utilization and death in children. Asthma and bronchiolitis are among the most common causes of respiratory distress and wheeze in childhood, contributing substantially to outpatient visits, hospital admissions and preventable mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This guideline update reflects evolving evidence in the management of these conditions.
The guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for the management of asthma in children and adolescents and bronchiolitis in infants and young children. Priority areas include acute and long-term asthma management, second-line therapies for severe asthma exacerbations, and key aspects of bronchiolitis care such as diagnosis, criteria for hospitalization, use of imaging, oxygen therapy and supportive treatments. The guidance is intended for policy-makers, clinicians and health workers across all levels of the health system and supports implementation in diverse contexts, with consideration of feasibility, resource use and equity.
The recommendations will inform future updates of the WHO Pocket book of hospital care for children and Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) guidance.
