Theodor Fontane (1819-1898) was the great novelist of Prussia, whose late novels rank among the finest in German literature. Known for Effi Briest, he wrote with equal power about the wilderness: Quitt (1890) is his most unusual novel, set partly in the American frontier and driven by a hunter's conscience.
Haberdash Books is dedicated to bringing overlooked works of European and world literature into English. We specialise in nineteenth and early twentieth-century fiction from lesser-translated languages and traditions.
