About the author

Theodor Fontane (1819–1898) was the great novelist of Prussia, whose late novels — written in his seventies — rank among the finest in the German language. Effi Briest (1895) is his masterpiece: a study of a young woman destroyed by convention, often called the German Madame Bovary.
