This volume gathers some of Porphyry's most significant philosophical writings: the four books On Abstinence from Animal Food, the subtle allegorical essay On the Homeric Cave of the Nymphs, and the Auxiliaries to the Perception of Intelligible Natures, supplemented by an appendix on the wanderings of Ulysses. Together they display the range of late antique Neoplatonism, uniting ethical discipline, metaphysical ascent, and symbolic exegesis. Porphyry writes in a learned, analytic style, yet one always animated by the conviction that philosophy is a way of purification. His readings of Homer exemplify the ancient habit of discovering profound theological and psychological truths beneath poetic surfaces. A disciple of Plotinus and one of the principal systematizers of Neoplatonism, Porphyry brought exceptional rigor to the philosophical traditions he inherited. His interest in abstinence reflects not mere dietary scruple but a larger concern with the soul's relation to embodiment, violence, and intellectual liberation. His allegorical interpretations of myth and epic reveal a thinker seeking concord between Hellenic paideia and philosophical revelation. This is a rewarding book for readers of classical philosophy, religion, and literary interpretation. It will especially appeal to those interested in how ethics, metaphysics, and poetry converge in late antiquity, and in Porphyry's enduring attempt to guide the soul toward intelligible reality.
