“The Phantom and the Princess” It's been nearly a year since I read Branded, so as soon as I knew this book was available I reread the first to refamiliarize myself with the characters as both books are so intertwined. The first 40% of this story parallels the events of the first book, only from Peyton and Radisson's points of view. That part set such a solid foundation for their relationship that when we move past that, to the real meat of their story, we already know they're going to tackle this life-threatening problem together. This is not a breezy rom-com. Like Branded, it's very dark, with a bold sense of justice and a medieval view of chivalry. This is exactly what I love about the book, but make sure you know what you're getting before you get into it. These characters are, at times, utterly depraved, and I'm totally here for it. It's as if Stockholm Syndrome and Lima Syndrome combined into a romance trope. Radisson is the kind of anti-hero everyone will love, once they see past his guarded persona to his self-sacrificing heart and family-first values. Peyton, too, is not what she seems at first, much to her credit. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know both of these characters on a far deeper level than their introductions in the prior story. The unrelenting intensity takes the reader on quite a roller coaster ride as we careen from one deep secret to another hidden surprise and back again. The HEA is such a victorious declaration of love and survival; it couldn't have been more perfect. While each of these two books, Branded and Roped, detail separate romances, their stories are entwined enough that the reader is advised to read both in order. If you crave dark, intense romances with deliciously depraved cowboys, you'll love these books.

If you are anything like me, this book will latch on and take you for a breathtaking ride that will not let go. So, be prepared to sneak in reading at any and every opportunity because I know that was me. I thought there was really something special about Peyton and Radisson and their romance. Trust me there are many bruises and bumps along the way, but every bump or bruise is so worth it. My heart is owned and I cannot wait to read more of this series just ASAP.
