About this ebook

Author Robert M. Kerns returns to Space Opera Science Fiction with The Shepherd, a novel of Shepherd Security Services.

Stolen livestock. A determined heir. A fateful choice.

Alex spends his days learning to manage the family sheep ranch. He wants nothing more than to take over when his parents retire, because his family has owned and worked it since the Westward Expansion.

But all is not well in Southwestern Wyoming.

Five neighboring ranches have been raided, all their livestock stolen without a trace… each on a new moon. Alex feels his family’s ranch is next and decides to spend the night with the flock when the next new moon comes around.

That decision changes his life forever.

How will Alex survive in an alien society?

good story, but very obviously written by a man. It was enjoyable but not exactly balanced. contains minimalist descriptions, so if you're looking for vivid world building this is not the book for you. interesting "flirting" but none of the female characters think to give him a crash course in social niceties or expectations... Also all the alien females think the obviously very different main character is hot as hell. Clothing is very important in culture but there is almost no mention of clothing in the book even glossing over the main character being seen in his "under things". I would expect the medical personnel would be foaming at the mouth to ask for samples and scans and any information the MC could give. I very much would have appreciated some sort of description of the bazaars, or to have the main character puzzle over some alien device only to find out its the equivalent of something mundane like nail clippers.

it's an easy read to pass the time. Not super complicated. it's a bit cliché as the scenes feel familiar to a middle of the road sci-fi. not good but not bad.

An interesting first novel, with a premise that starts off well, the lead character begins being likable but ends beginning to come across as self serving.
