About this ebook

You have a CCA date. Hold it. Between now and then: 490 questions with every option explained, three timed practice exams at the full 105 items, a 12-day weighted plan. No login, no expiry.

We built this the way a coding instructor runs a certification class, not the way a shelf gets filled. AHIMA's content outline has been in force since 1 May 2022. The sitting is 105 items in two hours: 90 scored, 15 unscored pretest items spread through. AHIMA prints a range for each of the six domains, so this book works to the midpoints of those ranges. Clinical Classification Systems lands near a third and takes four days; Reimbursement Methodologies lands near a quarter and takes three. One dated detail: sittings from 1 May 2026 use 2026-edition code books. Check us against AHIMA's published content outline. We would rather you did.

What's inside

490 original questions, every option explained. You'll see why the right code wins, and why the near-miss, the extra modifier or the reversed sequence loses.

Three practice exams at 105 items under a two-hour clock. That is the whole delivered paper, pretest items included, so pacing stops being a surprise.

The code systems taken apart. ICD-10-CM conventions and guideline logic, the seven character positions of ICD-10-PCS, CPT and HCPCS structure and modifiers. Concepts only, never reproduced code tables.

Reimbursement traced from record to payment. MS-DRG and APC grouping, the chargemaster, NCCI edits, denials, appeals, remittance advice.

A 25-item diagnostic on Day 1. Whichever domain it exposes gets your attention first, before you spend an evening in the wrong place.

Fifteen printable reference cards. The abstracting method, the sequencing method, PCS root-operation families, modifier basics, the revenue-cycle map. Maybe the last coding book you opened was mostly reference you already own. Give it three evenings. If the diagnostic and Day 1 tell you nothing about your guideline reasoning, stop there. One evening spent.

Three readers, mainly. A student finishing a coding program and sitting the CCA first. Someone moving into health information from the front office. A retaker who knows exactly which domain took them down. If you already abstract records for a living, start at Day 3.

Day 3 builds ICD-10-PCS one character at a time, and it is the evening people dread. Work it anyway, because the exam asks for that code position by position. Downloaded once, yours to keep.

About the author

Passmark builds one kind of book: the one that makes your study hours count. We start from a simple conviction — a certification exam is a skills test, not a memory test — so we never hand you a wall of facts to reread. Our method comes from the science of how memory actually holds: you learn by retrieving, not rereading; you revisit on a widening schedule so it sticks; every answer is explained, right and wrong, so you keep the reasoning; and a diagnostic points your hours where they will move your score. We read each exam's current blueprint ourselves, write every question from scratch, and check every number in the book — question counts, domain weights, practice tests — against the finished pages, not the marketing. When an exam changes, our books change with it.
