About this ebook

You have a CIC date. Hold it. Between now and then: 465 questions with every option explained, three timed 100-question practice exams, a 12-day plan that opens with a 25-question diagnostic. No login, no expiry.

We built this the way a coding supervisor trains a new inpatient coder, not the way a shelf gets filled. AAPC scores 47 items in four hours: 40 multiple-choice questions and seven inpatient cases. Those seven offer you nothing to choose from. You read the record and write the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes yourself. Nine multiple-choice items come from inpatient payment methodology, seven from documentation, seven from inpatient coding. Six from payer rules, five from compliance, three each from terminology and outpatient payment. Our papers run 100 questions, well past the exam's 40, because repetition is cheaper here than on test day. Check us against AAPC's published content outline. We would rather you did.

What's inside

The Record-to-DRG Path. Four moves on every scenario: Abstract, Diagnose, Build, Group. Build constructs the seven-character PCS code position by position. Group lands the MS-DRG.

465 original questions. Every answer shows the route to the code, and why the near-miss root operation or the reversed sequence loses the point.

Day 11, the case day. You work whole inpatient records end to end and write codes on a blank line, the way the exam asks on its seven cases.

Three timed 100-question practice exams, a 25-question diagnostic, and a quiz closing every day. A scored review after each paper returns you to the page behind the miss.

Open-book navigation, trained. How the two manuals are built, and how to move through them at speed. No CPT on this exam, and none in these pages.

Printable reference cards: inpatient sequencing, the seven-character build, root operations by objective, an IPPS and POA quick sheet. Maybe the last coding book you bought was a glossary with a quiz stapled on. Give it three evenings. If the diagnostic names no weak spot you had not already found, put it down. An hour is all it cost.

Three readers get the most from it. An outpatient coder moving to the inpatient side. HIM staff whose facility needs a credentialed inpatient coder. A retaker whose cases went badly. If ICD-10-CM is already your day job, start at Day 5.

Day 6 is the hard one, where the PCS build stops being a lookup and becomes yours. You'll find the fourth character catches people. Downloaded once, yours to keep.

About the author

Passmark builds one kind of book: the one that makes your study hours count. We start from a simple conviction — a certification exam is a skills test, not a memory test — so we never hand you a wall of facts to reread. Our method comes from the science of how memory actually holds: you learn by retrieving, not rereading; you revisit on a widening schedule so it sticks; every answer is explained, right and wrong, so you keep the reasoning; and a diagnostic points your hours where they will move your score. We read each exam's current blueprint ourselves, write every question from scratch, and check every number in the book — question counts, domain weights, practice tests — against the finished pages, not the marketing. When an exam changes, our books change with it.
