About this ebook

Weekly waste checks catch what's visible. Quarterly recalibration catches where the waste moved. Where the Waste Moved is the quarterly companion to Lean Operations Principles (Operator Playbooks 12). The weekly tools identify waste signals; the tools here ask the harder question once per quarter: has the structure that was eliminating waste stopped working, and does the organization actually have what it needs to run a real lean program?

A six-question diagnostic intake routes the reader to the right tool based on which calibration is most overdue.

Full Value Stream Map. A complete current-state and future-state map across the entire value stream, surfacing the waste shifts that weekly spot-checks miss. Two worked examples: a distributor running a current-to-future state map, and a multi-channel garment manufacturer mapping across three production tracks where waste had migrated between channels invisibly.

Takt Time Recalibration. Recalculates takt time against current demand and surfaces capacity-utilization mismatches before they become structural. Two worked examples: a B2C fulfillment operation recalibrating against changed order volumes, and a B2B fabrication shop recalibrating against project-based demand.

Lean Transformation Readiness Assessment. Tests whether the organization has the prerequisites for a major lean program before the program is committed. Two worked examples: a single-site food processing operation, and a multi-location fashion retail operation where readiness varies by site.

Each tool carries a self-scoring rubric, a quick decision tree, and tier adaptations for single-owner shops, mid-tier businesses, and pre-IPO operations. A quarterly plan at the back sequences the three tools across one full quarter.

This companion draws on operator experience running businesses in Indonesia. Examples, currency, and operational texture reflect that origin. The frameworks carry across to small and mid-sized businesses in other emerging markets and many developed-market SME settings.
