About this ebook

In glittering Naples, Madame de Ventadour reigns over a world of diplomats, nobles, and flirtation, her beauty matched by tact, wit, and that elusive magnetism society is eager to worship. Into this polished circle comes the young Englishman Ernest Maltravers, whose quiet intensity immediately intrigues her and sets the stage for a refined, dangerous intimacy. Their conversations range from travel and antiquity to literature, genius, love, politics, and the uneasy contrast between ideal feeling and lived experience, while the worldly Ferrers and suspicious Monsieur de Ventadour sharpen the scene's irony and tension. As Maltravers becomes a frequent visitor, moonlit walks and rides through southern landscapes deepen the bond between him and Valerie de Ventadour, revealing both their intellectual compatibility and their emotional divide. He brings scholarship and romantic depth; she answers with worldly insight, skepticism, and grace. Yet beneath the elegance, desire and self-deception gather force. When Maltravers finally confesses his love, Valerie's composed response conceals more than he realizes, and the moment alters both lives. Meanwhile, letters from England draw him back toward inheritance, duty, and family claims, reminding him that private passion cannot escape the larger demands of responsibility. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

Edward Bulwer Lytton, later Baron Lytton, was a prolific Victorian novelist, playwright, poet, politician, and public intellectual whose career helped shape the taste and reach of nineteenth-century popular literature. Born in 1803 into an aristocratic family, he studied at Cambridge, entered Parliament, and went on to balance public life with an astonishingly productive literary career that made him one of the most widely read writers of his age. He achieved lasting success with a series of ambitious novels that combined romance, social observation, melodrama, historical sweep, and philosophical reflection, and he also wrote influential plays, essays, and verse. His fiction often explores ambition, class, power, self-making, moral conflict, and the tension between appearance and inner worth, themes that still resonate in a world preoccupied with status, identity, and social mobility. Though once enormously famous and later sometimes underestimated, he remains significant for the way he helped define the modern sensational novel and for his skill in making ideas vivid through storytelling. Today, readers can still find in his work a lively intelligence, dramatic energy, and a keen eye for the pressures that shape human character. He will especially appeal to readers who enjoy classic Victorian fiction, richly plotted narratives, and stories where romance and social critique go hand in hand.
