Fourteen-year-old Ethan Carter likes Halloween, but he doesn't really believe in ghosts. He likes Halloween because it's a fun night with scary stories, outfits, and candy. But one Halloween night, everything changes.
Ethan runs to Briarwood Station but misses the last train home because he stayed out too late at a friend's party. His phone is almost dead, the station is empty, and the nearby dark forest scares him. Then, out of nowhere, a strange train shows up through the fog.
The train looks very old and strange. The outside is gold, the inside is black, and the smoke is a light blue color. The people on board are dressed in clothes from many different periods of history. Ethan chooses to get on the train when a strange conductor asks him to.
He soon finds out that this is not a normal train. It goes through memories, old stops, and strange places. The people on the train are ghosts whose travels aren't over yet.
Ethan meets Clara, a thirteen-year-old ghost, on the train. It's been over eighty years since Clara last saw her family. He makes up his mind to help her.
Lost luggage, letters, station signs, an old train ticket, and a silver pocket watch all have clues that they are following together. There is always something new and dangerous at each stop. Over time, Ethan finds out more about Clara's family history and her past.
The Halloween Train goes away in the morning, so they need to figure out what's going on before sunrise.
As they travel, Ethan learns important lessons about love, trust, courage, and how to forgive and be kind. He learns that some trips aren't just about getting somewhere. They can be about finding the truth, helping someone, making a promise, or going back to the people we love.
At the end, Ethan learns that home is often the most important place to go.
