About this audiobook

From National Book Award finalist Randy Ribay comes a gripping new chapter—starring Avatar Roku—in the New York Times bestselling Chronicles of the Avatar series, set in the world of Avatar: the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

A young Avatar Roku has only just commenced his training at the Southern Air Temple when his erstwhile friend, Prince Sozin, requests his aid in preventing the Earth Kingdom from claiming a remote Fire Nation island. Despite his inexperience, Avatar Roku slips away with the help of an irritating young Airbender named Gyatso. As the reluctant companions delve deeper into their wayward mission, they begin to realize that even greater threats lie ahead. Plagued by self-doubt but eager to prove himself, Roku fights for his life and the lives of others while ensuring that the hidden secret of the island doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

This searing fifth installment in the Chronicles of the Avatar series explores the beginning of Roku’s journey from privileged Fire Nation noble to the powerful but indecisive Avatar whose hesitancy may ultimately pave the way for the Hundred Year War.

NOT SAFE FOR CHILDREN! I am a huge fan of the avatar universe. i have watched both series read most of the books and comics so naturally I was really excited to let my daughter read this book because I had heard it was written in a simpler way than the others. like any good parent would I decided to read it first to make sure it was appropriate. thankfully I did because a few chapters in the author decided a book intended for children was a good place to put transgender and pan sexual propaganda about air bender culture not listed or shown anywhere else in any other part of this world. DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN READ THIS!

This story slots itself nicely into the running canon of the shows, the novels, and the entire extended universe. Giving fresh perspectives on known characters sheds light on the untold stories of characters like Gyatso and Roku, while adding fresh new locations and characters to bolster an already well-established world. My only complaint is that, after spending so much time reading another author's take on this universe, the storytelling and character depth is just shy of previously set expectations. Here, there is to be found a higher volume of characters lacking serious depth and motivation, serving more as obstacles and caricatures than characters to be taken seriously, looking specifically at Sozin's accompaniment as an example. Otherwise, though, the Reckoning of Roku continues a strong tradition set by the other Avatar novels of being made for chuldren or young adults while respecting their reading comprehension and adhesion to plot and character.

Not as good as the Yangchen or Kyoshi... Feels like it's for a much younger audience, but still good and nice to get more aquanted with Roku's earlier life. Even if it does rewrite some of the original lore. it is had for me to view this book as completely cannon to the ATLAverse
