About this audiobook
In 1981, Christine Schultz was found murdered in her Milwaukee home. Suspicion soon fell on Laurie “Bambi” Bembenek, a former Milwaukee police officer who was married to Schultz's ex-husband. Bembenek was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, but she consistently maintained that she was innocent. Then, nearly a decade later, the case took an extraordinary turn.In 1990, Bembenek escaped from Wisconsin's Taycheedah Correctional Institution and fled to Canada with her fiancé. Her escape sparked a massive manhunt and transformed her into a national media figure. Supporters rallied around the unforgettable “Run, Bambi, Run” slogan, while questions surrounding the original murder investigation continued to fuel debate. But what really happened to Christine Schultz? Why did investigators focus on Bembenek? What evidence led to her conviction? And what drove a woman serving a life sentence to risk everything by escaping prison? This book follows the remarkable story from the murder investigation and sensational trial through Bembenek's years behind bars, her dramatic escape, the flight to Canada, her capture, and the legal developments that followed. It also examines the competing claims surrounding the case and why questions about Bembenek's guilt and innocence continued long after her conviction.
