KDP Description
Rockaway Beach is more than a beach in Queens. For Mitchell Ball, it is where a lifetime of memories began.
In Rockaway Beach Logic: Surf, Sand, City Views—and a Whole Lot of New York, Mitchell returns to the Rockaway and Belle Harbor of his childhood—the old wooden boardwalk, summer days on the beach, sandbars, stickball and punchball, homemade skateboards, neighborhood stores, school days, first jobs, family gatherings, sailing on Jamaica Bay, and running with his father.
But growing up wasn't always easy. Mitchell also remembers being bullied, navigating New York City as a young man, watching familiar places disappear, and seeing Rockaway change through the decades and after Hurricane Sandy.
Writing the book brought an unexpected surprise: reconnecting with people from his past after more than forty years. The book also includes memories from other Rockaway residents and former residents, showing that there isn't just one Rockaway story—there are generations of them.
Part memoir, part local history, and part reflection on the strange power of memory, Rockaway Beach Logic asks a simple question:
How can we leave a place decades ago, yet somehow never completely leave it behind?
