The Paper Crane’s Secret
A historical fiction novel of hidden codes, lost identities, and one girl’s quiet rebellion in 18th-century Kyoto.
In the heart of Edo-period Japan, sixteen-year-old Aya lives a quiet life as a calligraphy apprentice in a respected Kyoto scroll house. But when a faded paper crane falls from an old ink box, it unveils a secret that changes everything—one tied to a coded message, a mother she never knew, and a past soaked in ink and blood.
Aya’s search for truth leads her through shadowy temples, underground archives, and Kyoto’s hidden alleys, where samurai, spies, and monks are not what they seem. As she unravels her mother’s identity—a kunoichi (female ninja) turned fugitive—Aya is forced to confront deadly truths. Will she protect her found family, or risk everything to expose the secret that could shake an empire?
Blending historical intrigue, Japanese folklore, and the delicate art of calligraphy, The Paper Crane’s Secret is a coming-of-age mystery filled with coded scrolls, silent assassins, and the quiet courage of a girl with ink-stained hands.
Perfect for fans of Memoirs of a Geisha, Shadow of the Fox, and The Ghost Bride.
