Tsukubai Japanese Watch Face

🪨 A TSUKUBAI IN A TEA GARDEN
The tsukubai is the low stone basin set outside a tea house, where a guest crouches to rinse their hands before entering. The whole dial is one, seen from directly above: still water held in hollowed granite, moss along the wet rim, raked gravel around it, and a bamboo spout resting over the water at twelve o'clock. Two small round wells are sunk into the stone at four and eight.

💧 A DROP EVERY FIFTEEN SECONDS
A bead of water gathers at the lip of the bamboo, hangs, falls, and goes into the pool. Four rings open from the point where it landed and fade as they widen. The rings stop at the rim: they spread across the water and are cut off by the stone and the moss, exactly as they would be in the garden. One setting turns the drop off and leaves the water still.

☁ FOUR SKIES IN THE WATER
Overcast, Blue sky, Evening light and Night change what the water is reflecting. Only the pool changes — the granite, the moss and the gravel stay as they are, so the dial reads as the same basin at a different hour.

🕰 FOUR HAND METALS
One shape — a slim bamboo-pipe hand with a pierced tail — in Aged brass, Blackened iron, Smoked silver and Shakudo copper. The second hand is the only one that keeps its ring, and it sweeps continuously rather than ticking.

⌚ TWO COMPLICATIONS
Battery and steps to start with, and both can be changed to whatever you prefer: heart rate, weather, calendar, timer and the rest. The battery arrives as an arc drawn around the inside of its well. The wells are cut into the artwork, so an unassigned one is simply an empty hollow in the stone.

🖌 FOUR COMPLICATION COLOURS
Washi white, Brass, Moss green and Water blue. The ink colours the values in both wells.

🔢 ANALOG OR DIGITAL
The face ships as three hands with the day of the month in a window cut into the stone. One setting takes the hands away and puts a large time in the water instead, in the watch's own 12- or 24-hour format. Everything else stays where it is.

⚫ ALWAYS-ON DISPLAY
A black ground with the twelve hour batons, the rim of the pool, and the hour and minute hands as outlines — 2.2% of the dial lit. The drop and the rings stop. Burn-in safe and easy on the battery.

Long-press the watch face on your watch to change the sky, the hand metal, the drop, the complications and their colour, and the analog or digital time.
