Rachilde (1860-1953), pen name of Marguerite Vallette-Eymery, was among the most influential and controversial figures of fin-de-siècle French letters. Author of the notorious Monsieur Vénus (1884) and co-founder of the Mercure de France, she challenged the conventions of her era with frank explorations of gender, sexuality, and power.
