Howard Pyle

Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was an American illustrator, writer, and teacher whose work helped shape the visual imagination of adventure literature. He wrote and illustrated books including The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, Otto of the Silver Hand, and Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates, combining historical romance with a strong sense of design and atmosphere. Pyle also founded an influential school of illustration in Wilmington, Delaware, mentoring artists who became central to American illustration. His images of knights, outlaws, and pirates helped define how later readers pictured the legendary past.
