Multatuli (1820–1887) was the pen name of Eduard Douwes Dekker, a Dutch colonial official who became one of the most radical voices in European literature. His novel Max Havelaar (1860) exposed the brutality of Dutch rule in the East Indies and triggered widespread political reform, making it one of the most consequential novels ever written.
