Afonso Henriques de Lima Barreto (1881–1922) was a pioneering Brazilian author whose modernist sensibility and social consciousness made him a literary outsider in his own time. Of mixed race and working-class background, he brought an outsider's clarity to critiques of Rio's elite, influencing generations of Latin American writers with his spare, direct prose and fearless engagement with racism and inequality.
