Henry Gilbert

Henry Gilbert (1868-1937) was an English writer best known for retelling history and legend for younger readers. His books include King Arthur’s Knights: The Tales Retold for Boys and Girls, Robin Hood and the Men of the Greenwood, and collections drawn from English history and heroic tradition. Gilbert wrote in a vigorous, accessible style while preserving the grave consequences and moral uncertainty of his source material. His Arthurian work helped introduce generations of readers to the rise of Arthur, the fellowship of the Round Table, and the darker legends surrounding Balin and the wounded kingdom.
