Gertrude Barrows Bennett

Gertrude Barrows Bennett was a Philadelphia stenographer who was widowed at the age of 26. She began writing novels and short stories under the name Francis Stevens in 1917 to support her young daughter and disabled mother. Her true identity did not become public until four years after her death in 1948.
