Beryl Fletcher was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1938. She received a master's degree in sociology from Waikato University in 1979. Her first novel, The Word Burners, won the 1992 Commonwealth Writers Prize in the Asia/Pacific region. Her other novels included The Iron Mouth, The Silicon Tongue, and The Bloodwood Clan. Her memoir, The House at Karamu, was published in 2003. She also wrote short stories. She died on February 21, 2018 at the age of 80.
