A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda was born in 1896 in Calcutta, India. He became an initiated student of bhakti-yoga – the yoga of devotion – in 1933. His guru asked Prabhupada to teach the bhakti path in English, and after a lifetime in preparation, during which he spent several years in deep study and accepted the renounced order of life, he began work on his life's masterpiece, in English: a multivolume commentated translation of the eighteen-thousand-verse Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and also wrote a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, entitled Bhagavad-gita As It Is. After publishing three volumes of the Bhāgavatam, Prabhupada came to the United State, in September 1965. He established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, traveled the world fourteen times in twelve years, and wrote more than fifty volumes of authoritative commentated translations and summary studies of the philosophical and religious classics of India.
