Zisi (481–402 BCE), also known as Kong Ji, was the grandson of Confucius and the master teacher of Mencius. He compiled The Doctrine of the Mean (Zhongyong), one of the Four Books of Confucianism. This foundational work defines the core Confucian ideals of centrality, harmony and sincerity, bridging individual moral cultivation and cosmic order. His writings shaped Neo‑Confucian thought for over a millennium.
