The Methods of the Sima – The Marshal’s Art of War is a rare and powerful reconstruction of one of China’s oldest military treasures. Counted among the revered Seven Military Classics, the Methods of the Sima predates much of the strategic tradition that later produced Sun Tzu. Yet unlike The Art of War, the original Sima Fa survived only in fragments. What remains are the preserved passages of the first scrolls—works of remarkable clarity, moral authority, and insight into leadership, discipline, and the nature of power.

This edition presents those surviving chapters in a refined, elevated modern English that remains faithful to the ancient sources. It captures the integrity, gravity, and philosophical force of Sima Rangju’s teachings while making them accessible to today’s reader. Nothing is invented or expanded. What you encounter here is the authentic core of a lost classic: the precise doctrines that shaped ancient armies, informed early statesmen, and defined the character of righteous command.

Within these pages, you will find a vision of warfare rooted not in deception or aggression but in order, virtue, humaneness, and just governance. The text teaches that an army’s strength rises first from the moral alignment of its leaders, the unity of its soldiers, and the disciplined structure of ranks and rewards. It shows that victory is not the product of force alone but of clarity, stability, shared hardship, and the unwavering trust between commander and troops.

For readers of military philosophy, leadership, history, or classical strategy, this volume offers an irreplaceable glimpse into a world where war was inseparable from ethical responsibility. It stands both as a companion to Sun Tzu and as a work of independent value—less famous, yet in many ways more grounded in the practical and moral foundations of command.

The Methods of the Sima – The Marshal’s Art of War is a disciplined, timeless guide for anyone who seeks a deeper understanding of leadership, structure, and the principles that bind people together under a common purpose. It is a lost voice restored, a fragment of wisdom preserved, and a powerful testament to the enduring philosophy of military order.
