She came to Scotland looking for an escape. She never expected to find a life worth staying for.

In the summer of 1895, American heiress Isadora Drayton arrives in the Scottish Highlands with her parents, hoping to escape the relentless expectations of her privileged life in St. Louis. Her family made its fortune outfitting wagon trains for the Wild West, but Dora has never felt at home in the world that fortune created for her. A holiday among the rugged mountains and endless summer days seems like the perfect chance to breathe—and perhaps discover what she wants for herself.

Then she meets Alec, Earl of Canairn.

Alec has learned to preserve his ancestral estate by renting it to wealthy tourists, and the camera-carrying American heiress staying on his land is unlike any guest he's ever had. Dora would rather photograph the Highland landscape than hunt or fish, has no patience for polite pretenses, and has an unsettling habit of saying exactly what she thinks. Yet the more time Alec spends with her exploring the moors and riverbanks, the harder it becomes to resist her honesty, her independence, and the warmth she brings to a life he's kept deliberately solitary.

Dora never expected to fall for a Highland earl. Alec never expected to want anyone beside him.

But Dora's future is waiting for her across the Atlantic, and Alec's life—and the estate he has fought to preserve—is firmly rooted in Scotland.

She came to Scotland to escape the life chosen for her.

Now she must decide whether she's brave enough to choose a different one.
