About this ebook

What if the missing years of Jesus’ life were not lost at all?

The Gospels pass almost silently over the years between Jesus’ childhood and the beginning of his public ministry. In 1887, Russian journalist and traveler Nicolas Notovitch claimed to have encountered an extraordinary answer at the remote Buddhist monastery of Hemis, high in the mountains of Ladakh.

While recovering there from a broken leg, Notovitch was told of ancient records concerning Issa, a revered teacher from Israel. According to the narrative preserved in those records, Issa left his homeland as a young man, journeyed eastward with a caravan of merchants, and studied among the religious teachers of India and the Himalayas. He spoke against caste oppression, empty ritual, and the worship of idols before returning to Israel to proclaim the oneness of God, compassion for the afflicted, justice for the poor, and purity of heart.

The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ: A Journey to Tibet brings together Notovitch’s vivid account of his travels through Kashmir, Ladakh, and Tibet with The Life of Saint Issa, the remarkable text he said was read to him at Hemis. The result is part travel narrative, part spiritual testimony, and part missing chapter in the most influential life ever lived.

A story that refused to disappear

Notovitch’s account later received notable support from Paramahansa Yogananda, the renowned spiritual teacher and author of Autobiography of a Yogi. In his monumental Gospel commentary, The Second Coming of Christ, Yogananda affirmed that Jesus had traveled to India and referred to Notovitch’s narrative in support of that conviction.

Nor was Yogananda the only respected spiritual figure to take the account seriously. Swami Abhedananda, a direct disciple of Ramakrishna, traveled to Hemis in 1922 and later reported that he had been shown a manuscript concerning Issa and had portions of it translated. The Russian artist, philosopher, and explorer Nicholas Roerich also recorded traditions of Issa during his journeys through the Himalayas and Central Asia.

Together, these later testimonies ensured that Notovitch’s account would not disappear as a forgotten curiosity. They form part of a wider and enduring spiritual tradition connecting the life of Jesus with the sacred wisdom of the East.

About the author

Nicolas Notovitch (born in 1858 in Kerch, Crimea) was a Russian journalist, author, explorer, and political commentator whose extensive travels took him across the Caucasus, Persia, Central Asia, Afghanistan, India, Kashmir, and Ladakh. After serving in the Russian army during the campaigns in Serbia and Turkey, he became a correspondent and published works on Russian politics, diplomacy, and international affairs. He is best remembered for The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ, first published in French in 1894 as La Vie inconnue de Jésus-Christ. In this remarkable work, Notovitch recounts his 1887 journey to the Hemis Monastery in Ladakh and presents the story of Saint Issa, whom he identified as Jesus, describing years of study and teaching in India and the Himalayas before his return to Judea. The book was rapidly translated into several languages and became one of the most influential modern works to explore a possible connection between the teachings of Jesus and the spiritual traditions of the East. More than a century later, Notovitch’s account continues to fascinate readers interested in the historical Jesus, comparative religion, Tibet, and the enduring mystery of Christ’s unrecorded years.
