About this ebook

The digital age has provided us with numerous technological advantages, but we must remember that computers are primarily storage devices which file things. The classification and categorization inherent within these binary system storage processes must not be allowed to overly infect our approach to humanity and diversity. We are all human beings first and foremost; not groupings of keyword searches.

Family trees are our personal map tracing the related individuals who are linked to our birth. The state or territory we live in has another history containing those who forged the communities in which we now reside. Nations are yet another wider circle of identifying factors contributing to our place in the here and now. Ethnicities remain a deeply held element of identity, as we can see by the ongoing debate about the colour of skin. There are, also, religious groupings, which remain closely connected, for some, to a sense of cultural identity. Who we are is not really all about the singular individual, as it is coloured by many contributing factors.

Time and life cycles affect our perception of our identity. When we are young, we are emerging from our family-based sense of self. Many of us want to make our mark, as distinct individuals, and strive to do so for years. Eventually, however, this motivating force dissipates, and we turn back to see who we really are in terms of family history and our place in the timeline of our community. Time gets us all in the end and we begin to comprehend that our life spans are tiny in comparison to the histories of humanity and the earth itself.

This is a collection of my eclectic writings over the past decade or more. Much of it published online in one form or another, fulfilling some role for someone or something.

About the author

I have been writing for a living for many years and have been working at my craft. Growing up surrounded by books via a family bookshop & readerly siblings I learned to love the written word. I recently completed a degree at Macquarie University majoring in ancient history and have gone on to complete post graduate studies. My motivation for such academic exploration has always been to understand more about humanity. We are born into our lives at a certain time and place but there has been so much more that has come before us. I do not think it is possible to comprehend one’s life without broaching the wider context of how we got to where we are.
