About this ebook

The Online Learner's Playbook is a detailed, practical guide to How to Succeed at Online Learning as an Adult for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include The Adult Learner's Edge, Pick a Program That Fits Real Life, Build a Time Budget That Holds, Set Up Your Digital Classroom, Study Smarter, Not Longer, Show Up in the Discussion Board, When Motivation Crashes: A Repair Kit, Copy-and-Fix Messages That Get Answers, The Seven Mistakes That Sink Online Learners, How Real Adults Do It: Three Field Reports, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Cherlanda Lavan Hartsfield is an adult education specialist and instructional designer who has spent more than fifteen years helping working adults learn at their own pace. Her career began in community college advising, where she watched capable students start courses with enthusiasm and then quietly disappear under the weight of jobs, families, and unfriendly schedules. That experience shaped her lifelong mission: to make learning fit the lives adults actually live.

She holds a Master of Education degree with a focus on adult learning and has designed curriculum and coaching programs for workforce development organizations, online training companies, and university continuing education divisions in the United States. Across her career, she has worked with adult learners making major transitions — new careers in technology, health care certification programs, first-generation degree students, and professionals returning to school after years away.

Her own story mirrors the one she writes about. While working full time and raising children, she earned an advanced degree through a self-paced online program, and the systems she built to survive that season — brutal honesty about her energy, micro-session scheduling, and a deeply held conviction that a missed week was not a failure — became the foundation of this book.

She is a frequent speaker on adult learning, study habits, and career reinvention, and her writing has appeared in industry publications on workforce education. She believes that no one is too busy to learn, only too unsupported — and that with the right structure, any adult can finish what they start, cheerfully and on their own schedule. She lives in the southeastern United States, where she still takes an online course every year, just to prove her own method works.
