Out of the night ride two saddle-tramps with a knack for trouble — a long, lean Texan whose hunches always run true and his short, square-jawed sidekick. They drift into Modoc looking for nothing more than a hot meal and a soft bed, and ride straight into a frame-up that reaches from the saloon roulette wheel to the express car of the eastbound train.
Before the dust settles there will be a holdup, a posse hunt across broken hills, a stolen letter that says more than its writer intended, and one quiet showdown in a town that thought it had bought every gun on its side.
