About this ebook

Mining the Dyson Sphere is a detailed, practical guide to Mining the Dyson Sphere for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include The Dyson Sphere Imperative, Types of Stellar Megastructures, Orbital Mechanics for Solar Collectors, Simulating a Partial Dyson Swarm, Energy Harvesting Methods Compared, Material Selection for Extreme Environments, Common Failure Modes in Dyson Sphere Components, Resolving Power Transmission Losses, Phased Construction of a Dyson Swarm, The Kardashev Type II Civilization Analogy, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

About the Author

**Todd Thompson Maryann** is a space resource engineer and research scientist at the Jacobs School of Engineering, University of California, San Diego, where he leads the Stellar Infrastructure Systems Laboratory. He holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where his dissertation on “Autonomous Swarm Coordination for Large-Scale Orbital Construction” received the AIAA Best Doctoral Thesis Award.

Dr. Maryann has spent the past fifteen years developing flight-proven technologies for in-situ resource utilization, including the regolith 3D-printing test bed that flew on the SpaceX CRS-19 mission to the International Space Station. He served as the principal investigator for NASA’s “Near-Earth Asteroid Prospector” concept, funded under the NIAC program, which demonstrated the feasibility of capturing and processing asteroidal material for space manufacturing. His work has been published in *Acta Astronautica*, *Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets*, and *Nature Astronomy*.

A frequent speaker at the International Astronautical Congress and the Space Resource Roundtable, Dr. Maryann is also a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the British Interplanetary Society (BIS). When not designing stellar energy harvesters, he races sailplanes in the California desert and cultivates a small vineyard in Temecula. *Mining the Dyson Sphere* is his first book, distilled from over a decade of research, teaching, and fieldwork in space resource engineering.
