About this ebook

Complete and unabridged, with 59 full-page plates by Thomas Gainsborough, John Everett Millais and Eduard Hau. A young engineer boards at a farm, and the farmer's daughter falls in love with a man who was never going to stay. Gaskell tells it in a hundred pages and does not raise her voice once; it is the most perfect thing she wrote. This edition adds fifty-nine plates of painting, among them works by Ford Madox Brown, Edvard Munch and John Collier, and prints the novella in four parts.
